Lady Falcons Claim Victory Against Spartans

Woodinville becomes the 4A KingCo League Tournament Champions after a fourth quarter comeback against Skyline.

Woodinville was able to erase last year’s defeat and elimination as the Falcons claimed victory over the Skyline Spartans 55-47, winning the 4A KingCo League Tournament championship. Falcons’ junior guard Deidre Miller led with 21 points, including five 3-point field goals.

“I told Deidre to not stop shooting,” said Woodinville Head Coach Scott Bullock. “Before you knew it, she’s dropping threes and she brought us back.”

For Miller, it had been a journey to get back into the game, missing her freshman and sophomore year due to an injury, and concluding her tournament experience by starting in the past five games.

“She couldn’t play the last two years because she tore an ACL,” said Bullock. “She hasn’t played since the eighth grade.”

The fourth quarter started when Woodinville’s junior center Ali Forde had a steal and a lay-up to get the Falcons (19-5) to within 2 points. Forde finished the game with 8 points, 17 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists. Miller made one of her 3-point field goals to give Woodinville their third lead of the game 43-42. Skyline answered with a field goal made by senior wing Michelle Bretl. Bretl finished the night with 8 points and one steal.

The Spartans (16-8) would take their final lead on a field goal made by sophomore guard Haley Smith, who finished with 12 points and one steal. The Falcons sealed the game with sophomore guard Kim Frost making her last two free throws with 43 seconds remaining in the game.

“We just didn’t execute in the fourth quarter,” said Skyline Head Coach Greg Bruns. “We didn’t make shots.”

The Spartans had a strong first quarter start, going up 10-2 in the first 4 minutes. Senior guard Lindsey Nicholson, who led Skyline with 13 points, made two consecutive 3-point field goals during the first three minutes.

“We ran a couple of different looks Woodinville hadn’t seen before,” said Bruns. “Lindsey knocked them down.”

There were times when the Falcons had many opportunities to score after making some big defensive plays, but most of their shots failed to follow through. Bullock gave his interpretation on what was going on in the first half.

“There’s a lid on the bucket,” said Bullock. “Some would go in and come out.”

An example was a shot from Woodinville’s junior point guard Alexis McLeod that went in but came back out.

Up next is the 4A State Tournament, starting Friday, February 25, at Inglemoor High School in Kenmore. The Falcons will face either the number 2 team from the West Central District 3 or the Southwest Washington District 4.
