Woodinville Winery Summer Concert Series Heavy on Nostalgia

Peter Frampton, Jethro Tull and Steve Miller Band to play at Chateau Ste. Michelle, as well as Chris Botti, Gipsy Kings, Yes, Amos Lee and Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges.

, which has hosted live performances since 1984, has announced a nostalgia-heavy Summer Concert Series that will feature music from two classic rock albums and an Academy Award-winning actor playing country music.

Jethro Tull, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band featuring Ian Anderson, will perform its Aqualung album in its entirety June 18 as part the album’s 40th anniversary.

In addition, Peter Frampton will be performing songs from Frampton Comes Alive! as part of that album’s 35th anniversary. “It's great timing for us to have those two acts,” said Linda Eller, the winery's communication director.

Conspicuously missing are the annual jazz shows usually offered the first weekend of August. after Seattle radio station KWJZ 98.9 FM, which sponsored the shows, dropped the smooth-jazz format in December and switched to modern rock.

But jazz fans do have a few options, including Grammy-Award winning trumpeter Chris Botti; Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, who are on a bill with Bruce Hornsby; the Gipsy Kings; and Pink Martini.

Among the acts making their debut this year are Frampton, Bridges, Jethro Tull, INXS, Yes, John Prine, Human League, Styx and Amos Lee.

All of this summer’s 18 shows concerts are outdoors in an amphitheatre setting and are held rain or shine. The shows feature lawn and reserved seating, with a capacity of 4,300.

“We’ve been really fortunate that most of these shows sell out,” said Eller. “Even with the bad economy these last two seasons.” Eller pointed out that several of the returning performers, such as Lyle Lovett and Chris Isaak, have loyal followings.

The winery’s annual summer concert series helps raise Woodinville’s profile locally, as some of the acts will be making Woodinville their only Puget Sound-area summer show. “It’s also good for business in Woodinville,” said Eller. “For example, is across the street and people will spend the night there after a show. People also dine in the area before and after shows, as well.”

Eller said the series is a good chance for those in surrounding communities to rediscover the city. “Maybe they haven’t come for a while and are thinking they need to come for the weekend.” Eller added that many concert-goers spot established and new wineries and make it a point to come back for future visits.

Tickets go on sale April 23 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster and at the Chateau Ste. Michelle wine shop from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except April 24. Two of this year’s acts, the Moody Blues and Garrison Keillor, on March 30, and tickets went on sale for those shows earlier this month. For more information, call 800-745-3000.

Parking is available on site but usually fills up quickly. The winery also offers free shuttle service from nearby parking lots.

The Chateau Ste. Michelle wine shop is open before all concerts with wine and picnic items available for purchase. In addition, an array of food vendors will offer a selection of menu items for sale in the amphitheatre. Concert-goers may also bring their own picnic baskets and nonalcoholic beverages. The Washington State Liquor Control Board requires that all alcoholic beverages consumed on the winery grounds be purchased at the winery.

Net proceeds from the annual concert series help fund Chateau Ste. Michelle’s charitable contributions program, which supports a broad range of non-profit organizations.
