Grab your gloves ... SAS at 21 Acres!

Northshore SAS students got hands-on experience recently at the 21 Acres Farm.

Contributed by Secondary Academy for Success (SAS) students Gracie, Chris and Laurie.

On June 17, 70 energetic SAS students boarded buses and went on down to the farm to enjoy hard work and sunny skies. Visiting 21 Acres is something we have done for the past six years. It is an opportunity to earn service-learning hours and give back to our community. Some of the tasks completed were cleaning the pond and shed area, weeding and mulching, and digging up bulbs. We even harvested lettuce, made a salad and ate it for lunch!

During our visit this year we had the opportunity to interview Brenda Vanderloop. Brenda is the Public Relations Consultant for 21 Acres and is now in the process of coordinating education classes. Brenda is all about trying to get the community to buy locally and support our local farms. At 21 Acres the mission is to give a quality demonstration of sustainable farming and environmental stewardship. By environmental stewardship we mean that they do not use any fertilizers or pesticides so weed control is something that the staff has to keep a handle on. SAS students are proud to be part of this vision.

We were also informed that on Aug. 26, 21 Acres would be hosting an open house to celebrate the opening of the new building, which includes classroom space, a demonstration kitchen and the future agricultural co-op, which will sell their delicious organic food to the public.Β  Watch for more information on this special event!
