Snow, Wind May Cause More Thanksgiving Travel Headaches

AccuWeather.com is forecasting a dry Thanksgiving with rain returning to Washington and Oregon on Friday. Check the chart for predicted weather-related airport delays this week.

AccuWeather.com is reporting that following travel delays in the Northwest and Midwest on the biggest travel day of the year, Wednesday, weather-related travel concerns such as snow and wind will be a problem for portions of the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day.

Travelers headed home from the holiday Friday and into the weekend may also deal with weather-related travel concerns with the return of windy and snowy weather for some.

West
The storm train will take a brief break for Washington and Oregon on Thanksgiving Day. Any mountain snow showers leftover across Montana, Idaho and Wyoming should taper off by the afternoon.

Rain will return to Washington and Oregon on Friday. Rain will spread into the interior Northwest into the weekend.

The Southwest should remain dry and quite mild through the remainder of the week and into the weekend. No weather-related travel delays are expected.

Midwest

Snow will fall across the Dakotas on Thursday, while a mix of rain and snow may make travel slick in northern Minnesota. Cold winds will also howl across the region as a storm skirts by to the north.

Motorists who have to travel along I-90 should allow extra time.

Ahead of the storm, it will be mild, but winds will be increasing across the Great Lakes. A few showers will develop from Missouri to Wisconsin.

Much colder air will spread across the Upper Great Lakes on Friday and Friday night, allowing lake-effect snow showers to develop across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, northern Wisconsin and northern and western Lower Michigan.

Snow showers and cold winds will persist across the Great Lakes region into the weekend, while the northern Plains remain dry and cold.

Southeast
Mild and dry weather will be in place across the Southeast on Thanksgiving with no weather-related travel problems anticipated.

Showers will spread eastward from the Ohio and Mississippi valleys on Friday. The showers will diminish as they reach the Appalachians during the evening hours.

A gusty breeze, drier and cooler air will follow for the weekend.

South Central
Much of Texas will stay dry on Thanksgiving, while a few showers push across Oklahoma and Arkansas along a cold front.

On Friday, showers and thunderstorms will reach central and southern Texas. Dry, cooler and breezy weather is in store for the remainder of the southern Plains.

Dry and relatively tranquil weather is in store for the south central states during the weekend. One exception is the chance for some low clouds and spotty showers in Deep South Texas with an onshore flow.

Northeast
Patchy fog and icy spots on roadways are threats of travelers across the interior Northeast early on Thanksgiving Day. Burlington, Vt., Albany and Syracuse, N.Y., and Pittsburgh, Pa., are among the cities that may have foggy conditions during the morning and midday hours Thursday.

For the rest of the day and across the remainder of the Northeast, dry, sunny and mild weather is in store on Thanksgiving.

A cold front will usher in showers Friday and Friday night that may cause minor travel problems. Any locally heavier showers can suddenly reduce the visibility for motorists and cause brief delays at airports.

Much colder and windy weather will arrive during the weekend, allowing lake-effect snow showers to develop downwind of the Great Lakes and down the spine of the Appalachians.

"Enough snow can fall in some areas to make roads slippery and bring sudden low visibility for highway travelers," AccuWeather Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said in a news story.
