Woodinville Tells Mother's Day Tales

A tale to warm every mother's heart and another to nearly stop a mother's heart.

Woodinville you are not big on sharing when it comes to personal stories. A for your best and worst Mother’s Day stories garnered only two responses, but it’s not quantity that counts but quality and both stories are well worth a read.

First, a heartwarming tale. Back in 1987, Woodinville resident Scott Garside’s folks had just retired and moved to the gold rush country of California to start their new life. After being long-time residents of Pasadena, California—where they raised their children and had high-profile careers—the transition was not easy. Scott picks the story up here:

“My sister and I told Mother that we were sending her a favorite treat for Mother's Day - New York-style cheese cake. What we didn't mention is that we would be delivering it in person. We both flew to Modesto, California--she from Denver and me from Seattle--and boarded a little puddle-jumper of an airplane for the final leg of the journey. With a frozen cheese cake on my lap, we hopped over the Sierras, narrowly avoiding another airplane in mid-flight.

Mother's reaction upon seeing us was a near coronary. She recovered and the cheese cake was delicious!

In the following years, my sister and I conspired to spring unexpected family events across the country; booking adjoining seats on connecting flights, playing waiters and waitresses on their vacations and so on. We're easing-off a bit as the folks aged so that we don't cause a real coronary!

The lesson for my sister and I is to keep surprising our Mother. Heaven knows we certainly did growing up as children! Why stop now?”

And now, a not so heartwarming—and yet amusing—Mother’s Day tale from Sheree James. Two years ago Sheree’s daughter, Maliyah, was not yet 3-years-old. Her son, was not yet six years of age. She ans her husband were getting ready to take their young family out to celebrate. Here is what happened that day:

“My son came to us and said, ‘Maliyah put a battery in her nose.’ Of course we didn't think this was possible since in our minds we were both thinking something along the lines of a AA battery. We called Maliyah in and looked but there was not a battery in her nose. We laughed and told Malakai (our son) to go play with his sister. A couple minutes later they came back into the bathroom and said something along the lines of, ‘really, she put a battery in her nose.’

Then we asked for more details and learned that our son had taken a small watch-like battery out of a Cinco de Mayo necklace my husband and I had brought home earlier in the week. Maliyah stuck the battery in her nose and we had no way to tell if it was in there. After finishing getting dressed we took her into her on-call doctor at the pediatrician’s office in Woodinville. He could see a "shadow" and confirmed she had "something" lodged in her nose. He then sent us to Children's Hospital in Seattle.

On our drive the battery liquid began to drip from her nose looking like it was bleeding. Thankfully she was not in any pain! We got to Children's and they basically strapped her down in a straight jacket. While screaming they stick a small tube with a tiny balloon at the end of it up her nose. They blow-up the balloon slightly and pull out the tiny battery!

Needless to say Maliyah has NEVER stuck anything in her nose since. Fortunately we were somehow able to save Mother's Day by spending a little time in Seattle for lunch and enjoying some sun-breaks!  It is definitely a Mother's Day I'll never forget!  It is also an emergency bill we will never forget!

There is still time, send us you Mother's Day tales and we'll post them through the weekend.
