The Barn in Woodinville Presents…Songwriters In the Round

Larry Murante, Carolyn Cruso and Tracy Spring

Saturday, March 10, 2012 7:00 p.m.

Woodinville, WA—Larry Murante, Carolyn Cruso and Tracy Spring, northwest singer-songwriters will perform together and solo in a songwriter-in-the-round concert on Saturday, March 10 at The Barn, located at 18711 152nd Ave. NE in Woodinville, WA. The suggested donation for the event is $10.

Seattle-based Larry Murante is known for his beautifully woven stories about every day folks, combining compassionate, socially conscious lyrics and an upbeat, joyful, energetic folk/rock style. Multi-instrumentalist Carolyn Cruso hails from the misty shores of Orcas Island. Her music is largely inspired by her travels both in the US and Europe, as well as her deep connection to nature, and keen interest in the stories of people she meets out on the road. Bellingham native Tracy Spring is known for her rich, compelling vocals, diverse writing and intricate guitar work, from searing love ballads and playful blues to songs that contemplate new life, the end of life and the spectrum in between. All three performers are regionally and nationally known for their full range, emotive singing, exceptional guitar work and award-winning songwriting.

Larry Murante is one of the finest contemporary singer songwriters to emerge from the Northwest in the past few years. His powerful, distinctive voice and songwriting have been compared to such artists as Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum and Michael McDonald. Larry is known for his soaring, mellifluous, tenor, a strong rhythmic guitar style and an engaging stage presence. His three CDs: Kiss Me One More Time, Water’s Edge and his most recent release, Point Of Entry received rave reviews from across the country and parts of Europe. Songs from his recently released Point Of Entry have racked up a string of accolades, the most notable being the Grand Prize Winner in the folk category of the international John Lennon Songwriting Contest, top five winner of The Great American Songwriting Contest and the West Coast Songwriters Songwriting Contest. Larry also was a Kerrville (Texas) Newfolk finalist in 2009 and won the Rose Garden Coffeehouse Song Contest in 2010. Larry tours nationally, performing at folk concerts, festivals, radio interviews and house concerts.

Folk Chanteuse Carolyn Cruso, weaves a web with her expressive voice, elegant melodies, and intricate guitar playing. She is drawn to the darker colors of tone which have led her to tune her guitar low as well as using multiple open tunings creating a palette for sensual lyrics that dig deep in their exploration of love, loss and redemption. As a performer Cruso casts a spell with diverse styles, subtle nuances and vivid images. Seattle’s Victory Review describes her music as "a hypnotic and alluring blend of folk, pop and jazz." Adding to Cruso’s substantial discography is her latest CD, Have You Ever (recorded on Orcas Island) which has been lauded as “sophisticated, intimate, rich and intelligent.” She is also an instrumentalist and composer but she’ll be performing solely as a songwriter at this Woodinville show, telling tales of travelling minstrels, seekers, divine misfits, glorious places, forgotten corners, and the remaining pockets of beauty left in the wake of man’s progress. Wielding two guitars, a dulcimer, a flute and her voice, Cruso roams the back roads of the country and of the mind taking the listener on a journey of beauty, love, redemption, compassion and humor. Critics and audience members alike say the she weaves an intricate web of magic with her intelligent, lyrical, and soulful music. JW McClure of the Victory Music Review says “Cruso’s voice is expressive and fluid…her guitar work is exceptional…this is passionate stuff.”

Long time Bellingham resident Tracy Spring writes full spectrum 3-minute novels, poetry and music all rolled into one. Combining folk, blues, old R&B, and jazz influences she displays a style all her own. Her wide musical range is demonstrated by the women she's been compared to: Sarah McLachlan, Tracy Chapman, kd lang, and Yo Yo Ma's cello. A seasoned performer, she has played in folk venues and festivals throughout North America and Australia, often combining her musical life with social justice work. A song she co-wrote, “Of This World” was included on Peter, Paul and Mary’s 2004 release, In These Times. She has published arrangements of a number of her pieces, such as her folk anthem “Walls Come Tumblin’ Down” and “A World of Difference (In Our Hands) for community choirs in the Northwest and beyond. Tracy has also won awards for her songwriting, most recently taking First Place in the 2010 and 2011 Tumbleweed Festival Songwriting Contests in Richland, Washington. Mark Horn from the Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange writes ”Her vocal range and control will blow you away…add this to fine finger picking and slide guitar work and you get one of the most well rounded musicians around…songwriter Tracy Spring sizzles with passion and is steamier than an August night in New Orleans. Songwriting is only half the story. Tracy sports an astounding vocal range with rich tone and exquisite phrasing.”
