I've been to all sorts of sports events and listened to every kind of crowd noise and chattering ... but walking with a number of golfers was a new experience. First there's the pace ... walking! And walking permits talking and story telling. I think golfers might nudge fishermen in the story department – not because of tall tales (just a wee bit of that) but because the stories are about good times and not just golf.
I listened to a funny story of why a car wouldn't start and why someone accidently sunburned his feet ... of course there were golf stories – "it was the wind's fault", long miraculous putts, quitting becase of the worse tropical storm "ever", why a particular club is soooo good.
... there's ritual: the players tee off, walk, find their golf ball and hit 'em again - all to the delight of the foursome.
Taking picture of the golfers just about convinced me I need to take up the game. I've lived here 20 years and now I have to learn the game someplace else.
Ain't fair!
