Update: Bikini Barista Coming to Woodinville?

Morning Star school administrators sent out a note to parents Wednesday about a nearby espresso stand becoming a "bikini barista."

Update 11:42 a.m. A note from Morning Star school now says the stand will NOT be a bikini barista coffee stand:

Dear Parents,

I have talked to the espresso stand owner and he has confirmed that he is NOT planning to turn the espresso stand under the White Stallion into a Bikini Barista. I would like to encourage you and others in the area to patronize his stand so that he can continue to be successful as a family friendly business. I would also like to thank everyone for their support of our school.

Original story -

A "bikini barista" is coming to Woodinville, according to a letter sent to parents from Morning Star preschool Wednesday morning.

The note follows:

Dear Parents,

The espresso stand located in our complex has changed ownership is planning on becoming a "bikini barista." The landlord can't exclude this, but is as highly against it as we are. I will be letting the espresso owners know that this is unacceptable to us and am letting you know in the hopes that if enough people express their desire for them to remain family friendly, that the new owner will abstain from changing into this kind of business.

Thanks for your support

The school is located at 15620 NE Woodinville Duvall Place in Woodinville and the closest espresso stand seems to be From the Grounds Up. Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

In January, a local coffee stand owner had their female employees wear "costumes" as an experiment, but it was a short-lived one and they stopped after only a short time. At that time the city of Woodinville did not have any ordinances against regarding scantily-clad baristas.

Just a thought ... How many of these kinds of coffee shops have been busted for prostitution?

Keith, you are thinking of the one next to the Apple Village Farm. That is now called Chateau Espresso and is very good. Patch did several articles on it when it changed owners. It is now family friendly. It's a drive through or I would recommend it as a replacement for Tully's as it's the same intersection (Hollywood Hill traffic circle). But if you want to grab a cup while staying in your car during your commute, this is he perfect place. I recommend the Madagascar Vanilla :)

How many hotels have been busted for prostitution? How many massage parlors have been busted for prostitution? How many politicians have been busted for soliciting a prostitute? How often are prostitutes busted on Highway 99? How many prostitutes advertize on Craig's List?

Ya just can't have ot both ways! The city planners and the massive $$$ made by the upbringing of Woodinville and other Eastside areas are a sidebar to urban growth. It will be a fight for sure. But, the sad reality is that urban America has a lot of unnecessary and unpopular things that go along with growth. I really don' think a 'bikini' stand is what bothers people. It's the reality of a 'semi-nude' offering that is the issue. Soon the strip clubs will make a bid and then the pawnshops will make a stand and the fight will escalate. The 'Up to yer butt in alligators, once the swamp is drained' parable is quite apropos here. If you desire modern city benefits, there are also negatives that commonly come with. It's one of those fine print things we all get burned by. Urban growth makes millions for some and denigrates others. Sad but true, they're here and we have to be careful or the 'Hwy 99' syndome will soon follow. Once a casino was OKed, the dominos started to fall. Peace!

I have been a regular customer at this coffee stand. I will switch and go across the street. White Stallion center is no place for a bikini barista stand. It is not just the Morningstar School, but the office building houses a number of therapists who see children on a daily basis. I can't see how this will benefit Italianissimo either. As a woman, I am uncomfortable visiting a bikini barista coffee stand.

In Europe, they are mature enough to allow topless sunbathing during lunch breaks. Our puritanical standards are what makes this sensational, not the boobs. Miss Good Time Charlie's? I don't believe there were any Hwy 99 street walkers with that.

Full Disclosure: I'm a free market guy and I believe in letting the market decide whether or not the service being provided is necessary. That said, picture this: You and your family go to Purple (or some other restaurant) for dinner. You peruse the menu, place your order and wait while enjoying your drinks. Some minutes later your server brings out your food. And he or she is wearing nothing but their underwear. You spew your cocktail through your nose as you react in unbridled surprise and shock. Why are you shocked? Well, it's just not something you expect to see in your local restaurant. But let's face it, it's kind of gross, don't you think? I mean, do you really want anybody in a restaurant serving you food in their underwear? Forget about the hot chick, how about some overweight hairy chested guy in his BVD's? No, thank you. Without getting gross, the sanitation issues are too many to ponder. From a marketing perspective, the idea is stupid. It may be working in some areas, but right off the bat you eliminate some of the folks with children who'd be embarrassed to stop. You eliminate the women who feel the whole idea is degrading. You eliminate the prudes who "wouldn't be caught dead" at a place like THAT. All these folks drink coffee and eat muffins; why limit your market unnecessarily? Trust me, the market will speak loud and clear on this one. I didn't go often, but I already miss the old owners...

If wearing a bikini while serving a great cup of Joe provides a wonderful income for a young lady, I say it's OK. We are not talking about prostitution, just serving coffee while wearing a swimming suit. There ARE laws against pornography and prostitution, and if that's what the barista is serving, then enforce the law. If you just don't like bikinis, stay away.

My son goes to Morning Star and we went to that shop quite a bit. They obviously have every right to become a bikini barista. We just won't be going back. The market will certainly decide if its a good idea for their business, but I have a feeling it won't last very long.

Very well said, Greg!! There is much wisdom in your words. After all, this is Woodinville -- not the beach, Europe, Highway 99, or a strip bar. People don't expect nudity to be seen in public in Woodinville. They DO have an expectation that people at the beach may have less clothing on than people in AK in the winter. This is not a debate about freedom of expression -- go express yourself somewhere where the expectation of that sort of behavior is properly zoned and you aren't exposing children or adults who don't want to see that in public to that sort of indecency. Thanks for your words of wisdom, Greg!!

I am very dissapointed in the Patch for spreading what was no more than an unsubstantiated rumor from Karen Hergert. You almost put a small business OUT OF BUSINESS. All on the word of an always angry woman who has no respect for anything outside of her own profit. Should neighbors spread false rumors about Karen's preschool in the Patch? I was hoping we would see some online reporting here not just vicious rumor mongering.
Greg Fazzio October 11, 2012 at 10:11 PM
Jim, agreed, there's no place for rumors in what purports to be an unbiased news gathering organization. Patch - let's check the facts before letting the dialogue get out of control. And to "Who Spilled the Beans", I'll be up to get my hot cocoa shortly :-)

Hi all, The follow-up story is here - http://patch.com/A-y70C. They did discuss doing this on the weekends and in fact, did do it, prompting the protest.

So an Alice in Wonderland Costume is a Bikini? What's up here?
Ron Olson October 11, 2012 at 11:47 PM
This is all balogna. The girls were NOT in bikinis, and they never planned to do that. This story was trumped up right from the start just to cause trouble. The "Neighborhood" was never in any danger from pornography. An apology is in order.
Mark Skattum October 12, 2012 at 12:11 AM
As I am a open minded sort of guy, I am amused at times about this bikini coffee thing. There will be problems and a guarranteed loss of business for the place, just due to the site it's on. No local boys will go for fear of rebuke. The people that will go, will be from out of the area and sad gawkers. Along with them come the rest of the bottom feeders. But, I must say that given only the info from the article and this forum, I really am not understanding what the hell the fuss is about. Is all this really just a rumor gone out of control and the Patch a player due to lack of research? Peace!

If you serve your beans in jeans, I will bring in a pair for you to fill. I won't go to the Morning Star preschool, though, those screaming kids disturb the whole neighborhood!
AJ October 12, 2012 at 02:26 AM
Lisa Baumann, Consult with me before you slender my Business, This was a rumor that wasn't discussed before anyone made this false statements about my stand going bikinis! WE ARE FAMILY FRIENDLY!! " WE SERVE OUR BEANS IN JEANS!
Ron Olson October 12, 2012 at 02:34 AM
AJ....you deserve an apology from the owner of the Morning Star Preschool and she should post the apology at her school....but look at all the free publicity you got!
Ann October 12, 2012 at 03:18 AM
Well, I WAS there the day your employee was dressed in a costume. You can't go attacking people's opinions because you got your rear handed to you for opening up a costume stand in our neighborhood. Back-pedal all you want - I just wish I had a picture to back up what I personally saw.
AJ October 12, 2012 at 03:48 PM
Ann if you have a problem witm my stand STAY AWAY all your doing on here is creating more drama. You have something to say come say it to me! Between you and karen slandering my business and you keeping it going is ridiculous. Dont fret about my response on here and especially if it wasnt meant for you. No one rear handed nothing to me so lets get that straight.
Ron Olson October 12, 2012 at 04:24 PM
Ann, please tell us EXACTLY what you saw. Was it a bikini? Did you see anything beyond what you would see at the beach? Would you describe what you saw as pornography?
Rennie October 15, 2012 at 12:46 PM
Andre Johnson, You still owe your past employee's money for hours worked at that stand. I would be more concerned about paying what you owe than what you wear.
