Professor David Montgomery really likes dirt. In his recent books, The Rocks Don’t Lie: A Geologist Investigates Noah’s Floodand Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations, he explains how rocks and soil reveal our world’s past, our present, and our possibly endangered future, focusing on flood myths and soil erosion in agriculture.
21 Acres welcomes Dr. Montgomery at a Book Event, Saturday evening, Nov. 10. Soil productivity is a priority at 21 Acres. It matters to local sustainable food systems and it’s at the top of the list for sustainable practices. The 21 Acres Farm pays careful attention to soil maintenance and fertility. Current treatments of topsoil on many American farms intends to extract the most productivity, for the least cost, rendering much of what is left as ‘exhausted dirt.’
Dr. Montgomery is a geomorphologist, environmental author, and MacArthur Fellow. The MacArthur Foundation, when handing out it’s 2008 “Genius” Award, stated, “With a scientist’s rigor, a historian’s curiosity and an environmentalist’s passion, Montgomery is unsettling accepted wisdom about both local and global environmental change by exploring the ecological consequences of a wide range of Earth surface processes.”
Dr. Montgomery loved maps as a kid and currently writes and speaks about the relationship of people to their environment and other topics that interest him. According to Candice Goucher, Professor of History Washington State University, “Dave Montgomery is a rare breed of public speaker, who can engage a diverse audience at all levels and from multiple disciplines, with passion and wit.”
The public is invited to join Dr. David Montgomery at 21 Acres, Saturday, November 10, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. 21 Acres is located at 13701 NE 171st Street in Woodinville. The event is free, but donations are requested. A light dinner will be served with ingredients sourced from the 21 Acres Farm and Market. Dr. Montgomery will stay after to sign his most recent book, The Rocks Don’t Lie: A Geologist Investigates Noah’s Flood.
