Wine Pick of the Week: 2007 JM Cellars Late Harvest Semillon, Columbia Valley

The husband and wife team of John and Peggy Bigelow have been making wine for over ten years at their Woodinville-based winery, . John retired from a career in high tech in 2006 to devote to winemaking full-time.

Best known for their red wine blends, the Bigelows make a pleasantly balanced dessert wine, the 2007 JM Cellars Late Harvest Semillon. John Bigelow only makes a dessert wine in vintages that warrant it, every five years or so. In Bordeaux, more specifically Sauterne, late harvest Semillon and late harvest Sauvignon Blanc is often blended to produce some of the best dessert wines in the world.

Modeled after the Bordeaux dessert wines, Bigelow crafts a versatile wine. Bigelow waited until December 17 of 2007 to pick the Semillon for this sweet wine. The result is a concentrated wine with 18 percent residual sugar. Flavors of Asian pears, ripe apples, figs, almonds and vanilla cover the palate. Pleasant acidity (Meyer lemons and lemon zest) cleanses the palate and balances the sweetness.

Some late harvest Semillon from Washington state are versatile enough to pair with a creamy dessert such as crème brulee, a comfort dish such as fried chicken or the classic foie gras. The mosaic of foie gras and duck confit at The Salish Lodge is a classic pairing for this classic wine. The JM Cellars Late Harvest Semillon has plenty of acidity to stand up to the richness of foie gras. The apple, pear and fig flavors in the wine echo the Washington apple jelly, and fig and prune chutney that is served with this dish.

The wine is available at the JM Cellars tasting room in Woodinville, opened Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 pm or on-line at www.jmcellars.com for $32 for the half-bottle.

I have been extremely frustrated in the past in trying to effectively communicate with Frontier. MyRead More developing sense was one of very poor live support. I find it refreshing to see Frontier respond in a timely manner to this very public assertion. One can hope this is also occurring in your phone support, especially after hours...

I have spoken to Mr. Gaulke and assured him we are not cutting speeds in the Woodinville market (orRead More any of our markets). We are working with him to approach his technical issues from scratch and will do all we can to alleviate his concerns about his speeds. His business, and all the business from our customers in the Woodinville market is very valuable to us. While we are disappointed to receive feedback his service is not living up to our standards, we are grateful for the opportunity to work with Mr. Gaulke and keep his valuable business. We welcome inquiries from other customers if there is anything we can do to improve. Please reach out to me at 425.275.8579 and let us know how we can help. Frontier has spent the past three years expanding broadband to hundreds of thousands of homes acrossRead More the US and increasing speeds in many of our markets. Mr. Gaulke’s experience and recount of his conversation with one of our reps comes as a surprise to us. We are checking our records to find out what the possible miscommunication could have been. In the meantime, let us be clear: We are not decreasing speeds in Woodinvile, or any of our markets for that matter. We will be reaching out to Mr. Gaulke to see if we can alleviate any lingering concerns. Christy Reap Frontier Communications
