What's at the Woodinville Farmers Market This Week? July 9

Berries from Youngquist Farms have finally arrived after a cold start to the season.

If it’s summer, it must be time for berries. And with the seemingly endless cold spring weather behind us, Youngquist Farms is starting to deliver.

Last week, shoppers tasted juicy, sweet strawberries on the first hot day that the has seen this season. Youngquist Farms will have more strawberries on Saturday.

Raspberries are probably still at least a week or more away, said Nate Youngquist.

“Last year, we were picking raspberries June 15,” Youngquist said. “This year, our early variety froze out. So we won’t even pick them.”

Instead, they’ll have later varieties. And in another goofy weather twist, blueberries might be ready earlier than the raspberries, he said. Blackberries are also late this year. (Those pies and jams are going to have to wait.)

“Everything is honestly about a month behind schedule because of the cold spring,” said Youngquist, 27, who has worked the Mount Vernon farm with his father, Dave, for years and is taking over operations.

You may have eaten Youngquist Farms berries elsewhere; they sell berries at 15 to 16 farmers markets in Western Washington, as well as to Charlie’s Produce, a major Seattle supplier that serves area grocery stores and restaurants.

The Woodinville Farmers Market is open Saturdays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., until fall. It’s located at 17301 133rd Ave. N.E., next to City Hall.
