5 Tips to Getting Into the Best Culinary Schools

The best culinary schools are out there and you want to attend them. It’s important to get an education from accredited culinary schools and you have to be accepted into their programs. Some schools have a waiting list to get into, which means you need to show why you deserve to go to that school. There are some tips to help you get into the best schools around the country.

Create a List
You need to make a list of top cooking schools that offer the program that you want. Are you interested in baking, cooking or managing? Some schools offer different programs, so you must first establish which schools are the best for what you want to study.

Don’t apply to just one of the schools. You want to apply to all on your list to improve your odds of being accepted into one of the better schools.

Have Experience
You should have some form of culinary experience on your resume. When you are choosing the best culinary school, you have to understand that they take culinary arts seriously. If you don’t have any experience, they are going to wonder if you really have the passion. Some want to see at least two years of experience in the culinary world before they will even think about admitting you into the school.

Talk to local restaurants and resorts to see where you can get started. You may have to start as a prep cook in order to get started, but you will learn a lot along the way.

Intern with Top Restaurants
A list of top cooking schools often works with top restaurants in the area. See if you can intern with one of these restaurants – even if you don’t get paid for it. Not only is it going to provide you with invaluable experience, it will look great on your culinary school application. If the restaurant can put in a good word for you with the admissions office, it may help you to get in even faster.

Take School seriously
As you finish your regular studies in high school, focus on getting the best grades possible. Don’t assume that a culinary arts education is any less challenging than another degree program. If you want an education from accredited culinary schools, they are going to look at your GPA. They don’t want to give a spot to someone with a C average when they could be giving the spot to someone with an A or B average.

Follow Up on Your Application
Applications get lost in the shuffle all the time. If you haven’t heard back from a culinary school after submitting your application, wait a few weeks. If you still haven’t heard, it’s best to follow up and make sure they have it and they have all the information they need from you.

When it comes to choosing the best culinary school, you have to make sure they choose you, too. The better you can make your application look, the better it will be for you. Work on getting some culinary experience on your resume. Work on your grades in high school and even in college. If you want to go to one of the better culinary schools, you have to make them want you as a student.
