Our First Free Date Almost Fails

This is our first date in series of free dates for November 2012. Do you think we can do it?

It's embarrassing to admit, but I almost ruined our first attempt at a month of no cost dates.

I figured out that I have a tougher time staying  focused on our dates when we do them at home.

Can you relate?

Well, I learned my lesson and I'm sure I will get better at this as we go.

Here's how it went:

Since it was my choice last week, I picked a FREE (other than the grocery supplies we already had in our fridge) breakfast date at home.

Saturday morning, we woke up early and snuck downstairs while the kids were sleeping. We knew waking them up would ruin any chances at making our breakfast together feel like a real date.

I got a new waffle maker at the thrift store five minutes from our house the other day, so I was excited to use it. Guess how much it cost? Only $3! It gives me a thrill just thinking about it. I love bargains.

Hubby plugged it in and I got to work brewing up a big pot of Saturday morning coffee. We like Costco’s generic version of Starbucks dark roast beans.

Hubby found a recipe in our new Vitamix cookbook for tofu waffles. We rarely eat tofu, so I was a bit leery. Hubby insisted they would be good, and he was excited about testing out the Vitamix for blending waffle batter.

While Hubby was mixing and blending away, I grabbed a bag of frozen blackberries to make yummy syrup to top our waffles with. Another thrill for me, since our family hand-picked them last summer. It not only brought back good memories of the family time together, but it saved us a bunch of money. Free blackberries are a good thing!

Have you seen how much a 3 pound bag of berries costs in the store?

As I was peacefully stirring away on the stove top, I suddenly remembered I had some urgent emails to return for work.

“Just 10 minutes! I will get it done as quickly as possible!” I told Hubby as I raced into our home office.

“What?! You’re breaking the rules!” hubby said, half teasing.
