Empty Kegs Stolen From Station Pizzeria on Thursday Night

Eight to 12 empty kegs valued at approximately $50 each were stolen.

Station Pizzeria is reporting that 8 to 12 empty kegs were stolen from the establishment on Thursday night. Each keg is valued at approximately $50.

Caylee Betts of Station Pizzeria said that it is illegal for metal recycling companies to buy the empty kegs so she hopes the thieves will choose to return the kegs anonymously when they realize they can't do anything with them.

If the pizzeria doesn't recover the kegs they will likely have to pay the respective breweries approximately $1500, said Betts.

Betts asks that people keep an eye out for the kegs, which she expects will probably end up in a local dumpster.

Editor's note: The body of the text was changed at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday to match the original subhead, which said that 8-12 kegs were stolen.

How does this math work... 8-10 kegs, "valued at approximately $50", to $1500? Insurance fraud? 10 * 50 is $500, 1/3 of that.

Somebody left the kegs outside? Maybe the City should require all business owners to install video recording equipment at their retail locations to deter crime.

Hey guys. Yes, this math typo was published here AND in the Woodinville Weekly... haha, I wish someone would have caught it. I was quite surprised to see it in the newspaper this way. The kegs were locked up out back. The lock was cut. It's not atypical for businesses to store empty kegs this way. We never did find them. Most breweries charged $45 for the stolen empties and we ended up with 8 missing (we were unsure of the number at the time without having done exact inventory on it). We did not file an insurance claim, Tony. Redhook just had quite a few of theirs stolen, but the thieves were caught with all the kegs in their vehicle! I wonder what people do with them. Apparently you can make some drugs in them. Bummer. We store ours inside now.

Further, new kegs are around $200 so many breweries suffered from this. There is also a shortage of these kegs right now. Many breweries have been waiting months for new ones. It's all really too bad.

Thanks for the input Caylee. I wonder if the writers of these stories got the $50 worth of each keg confused with the $200 price of a new one. Thanks, though, for clearing it up – and the news on Redhook's recent theft is interesting, too. I'll try to follow up on that.
Why is there a keg shortage?

Lisa, shortage of barrels could be consistent with the adage of beer sales increasing during financially distressed periods! http://money.cnn.com/2011/06/08/news/companies/alcohol_sales/index.htm

Thanks Lynn! Guess that's not too surprising...

The shortage is much more likely due to a couple of unrelated factors.
First, vast majority of Beer Sales (BMC = Bud, Miller, Coors) are NOT growing, and don't match what liquor or wine sales have done during the downturn. Craft Beers are in fact growing strongly. But craft beer is only 5-10% of total beer sales. One of the barrel sizes they use 1/4 barrel, used to be predominant in soft drinks (premix and postmix tanks). In terms of demand, they are almost non-existent. The big reason however, was already identified....the resale value of the metal for 1/2 barrel kegs, to unscrupulous metal recyclers. This is why you hear of thieves cutting padlocks, and breaking into beer production facilities.

Hello Mr. Francois and NSD School Board, I have been keeping an open mind about the choice ofRead More Wednesday as the early release day. I kept an open mind, but not so open that my brains fell out. I voted for Friday for a reason. Not to take my child out of school early or in hopes that teachers would see it as a day off, but because it made the most sense for my family. Wednesday wasn't a horrible day and was my 2nd choice. Personally, now, after reviewing others input, your input and doing some thinking on my own, I believe you made the wrong choice. Your parents have brains, we are educated and we gave you our opinion and trusted that you would actually use the poll data wisely. You failed us, therefore you failed our children. It is okay so say you made a mistake, that is what we teach our children. Please tell your parents you made a mistake and make Friday early release day for the new school year. Positively hopeful! I have lived in Woodinville for over18 years. For around 5 years after we moved there on any warmRead More summer night you could look up and see at least 3 balloons and many times 4,5,6 or 7 of them but that all stopped abruptly one year. The explanation we got was that the balloonist were following the French historical practice of awarding a bottle of champagne to any land owner who's land they happened to land on. Well, the state couldn't allow that since the balloonist had no liquor license. Don't you just love government?
