Woodinville to Decide the Fate of the Old Woodinville Schoolhouse

Will the old brick landmark be renovated or razed?

The fate of the old Woodinville Schoolhouse will be decided at Tuesday’s council meeting. The 1936 building was built by the Works Progress Administration and sits on the site of Woodinville’s first public school. It is one of the few historic buildings left in the city. Will it be rented, rehabbed, or razed? That’s the question before the council.

Rehabilitation of the building, which sustained structural damage from the 2001 Nisqually earthquake and has remained unoccupied since, could run as high as $3.6 million for a complete renovation of the building.

Woodinville City Council will be deciding on what is financially feasible for the building’s future, based on a study that focused on three options: renovating the building, renting it, or demolishing it. Parking for the building is limited; it shares a parking lot with the which was recently leased to the . Lack of ample parking makes the building less than desirable for major commercial development, according to the study. It also means the city may not be able to charge enough rent to cover teh cost of repairs needed before the building could be occupied.
