Spring into Pet-Friendly Gardening at Homeward Pet Event Night!

Springtime = Gardening Time! But a garden can hold many hazards for our four-legged friends.

Join us for Homeward Pet Event Night at Molbak's for "Spring into Pet Friendly Gardening", Thursday, April 25, 5:30-6:30pm. For event details:  http://www.homewardpet.org/temp/MolbaksEventNight42513.pdf

Many popular outdoor plants – including rhododendron, lily, oleander and even the stems and seeds of apples and cherries - are toxic to cats and dogs, causing a range of issues from nausea and diarrhea to slowed heart rate and kidney or liver failure.  A list of toxic - and non-toxic! – plants is available from the ASPCA (http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plants/).

Fertilizers and weed killers can wreak havoc on animals’ digestive systems.  Follow instructions carefully, and be sure to wait the right amount of time before letting your pet run outside.

Insecticides and pesticides can be dangerous to pets, especially snail bait with metaldehyde, insecticides with disyston or disulfoton, and most forms of rat poison.  Always store pesticides in inaccessible areas and read labels carefully.  Or, look for non-toxic alternatives.

It might also be time to treat your pet for fleas and ticks, who can lurk in tall grass (another reason to get out there and mow that lawn!).
