The Road to Hell Is Often Paved with Good Intentions
This quote has stuck with me for a long time. “Robbie”, a psychology professor, used this line repeatedly in class and in informal talks with students. Robbie was probably a classic case of PTSD before anyone knew what it was. He was a bombardier in B-25s in Italy during WWII and was a noticeably dysfunctional soul and one exception good teacher.

As I watch what’s transpiring in America’s educational systems today, I keep thinking back to his quote. Many of the proposals for educational reform that have received substantial media support and gained significant traction in American society are well intended, but are heading America’s public schools down the road to dismemberment and privatization. For me, those are descriptions of “educational Hell.”

Some of the proponents of educational reform today have no real interest in improving America’s public schools, but only wish to tap into the billions of public education dollars for personal and corporate profits. They care little that their measures are tearing apart America’s schools. Which make them far worse than those simpletons with good intentions.
After 37 years in the classroom, I’m forced to watch America’s public schools torn apart and America’s teachers vilified. I do not do so in silence, but the suffering is still genuine.
