Tacoma area parents seek to open charter school
Tacoma area parents seek to open charter school.
In the wake of last fall's voter-approved Initiative 1240, parent-led groups interested in opening charter schools in their communities are starting to emerge. Debbie Cafazzo atThe News Tribune reports on parents' intentions to pursue charter school applications in their local Tacoma and Peninsula school districts.
One parent, Calyn Holdaway, has a great take on what's possible under the new charter school law. She is weary of the traditional top-down approach to public education. She has had a string of disappointing experiences with the Yelm and Peninsula school districts, and has had to work through an appeal process in the Peninsula school district to get help for her children. Noting her frustrated efforts to get help for her children, she is now seeking to open a school for at-risk youth and special needs students.
The state Charter School Commission has started its work, so we can expect more community-based groups around the state to emerge as the application process gets under way.
