Maywood Hills Elementary School Named 2013 Health Champ

Washington State Public Health Association (WSPHA) named Maywood Hills Elementary School a 2013 Health Champion for providing children with a safe school environment.

In celebration of National Public Health Week, April 1-5, the Washington State Public Health Association (WSPHA) named Maywood Hills Elementary School a 2013 Health Champion for providing children with a safe school environment through their work to raise awareness of the importance of immunizations.

“Maywood Hills is a participant in the Immunity Community (IC) program of Vax Northwest,” said Mackenzie Melton VAX Northwest Immunization project coordinator and nominator for the award. “Under the leadership of school nurse Peggy Sturm, parent advocates Kendi Locknane and Rachel Anderson and nursing supervisor Sandra Tracy,  these women elevated the importance of immunization by disseminating educational materials, speaking at PTA meetings and writing articles in school newsletters.  Their efforts helped increase vaccination rates among its student population and raised awareness of the community-wide benefit of immunization.”
