Meet Sustainable Renton

Transition Free Press ~ Cascadia/US, a "good news" project from Transition Woodinville, recognizes Sustainable Renton as our May Sustainable Heroes and Heroines.

“To foster a healthier community and planet” is the Mission of Sustainable Renton, a non-profit service organization located in Renton, Washington. A certified 501c3, Sustainable Renton has been in existence since the fall of 2010. Entirely volunteer-run, the organization primarily focuses its efforts on issues related to healthy food in our community.

The grandest example of these efforts on healthy food is Sustainable Renton Community Farm, established in the summer of 2013. This farm, located in NE Renton, is a space where residents can lease a plot of land to grow vegetables, flowers, etc. For this 2014 season, the farm is expanding to double its size from last year. There are plans to incorporate fruit trees and beekeeping into the farm as well. It is a wonderful way to reconnect with both the Earth and our community.

There is also an initiative to start a Renton Food Co-op. A small, but dedicated group of volunteers is working to educate our community on the benefits of having our own, independently-operated food co-operative in Renton.

Our organization also hosts Meaningful Movies, a series of provocative, informative films, held once a month on the last Friday. A new study group is focusing on ways to affect large systemic change in our community and society at large. We also host frequent workshops on a variety of topics with knowledgeable guest speakers.

It is our belief that any effort made to improve the quality of life of our community and residents is valuable. It sometimes is a hard road with a limited number of volunteers, but grand strides have been made as we focus on our mission at hand.
