RANT: Woodinville's Horrible Mail Service

Does anybody else who lives in Woodinville get the kind of pathetic mail service I get here, in 98077? Mail regularly comes after 4 PM! The record for late delivery was sometime around last Christmas, when the mail arrived very close to 9 at night! Our family has one car, so I frequently have no choice but to use the online pick-up request service. Last night I scheduled a pick-up for 12 outgoing packages, including 5 Priority Mail packages (key word there being Priority)... well, it's 6:10, and the mailman JUST pulled up! Pretty bad, considering the Priorities, but this has happened several times with Express Mail (overnight) packages. I really love paying $30-$45 for an overnight package that ends up taking the same amount of time as $5 Priority Mail should (2 days), all because my mailman moves about as fast as molasses. It's driving me nuts!!! Argh!

I agree it's not that great. Last night the mail came at 7:45pm.

My service is great and live just outside Woodinville proper. I feel sorry for the postal workers who have to wonder where the next cuts will be thanks to congress mandating funding their retirement system ahead for postal workers who have not even been born yet. Post offices are closing, Sat. mail delivery is on the way out and there are fewer postal workers. Please complain to congress, not the people who can do little about it.

Hmm, mailman's wife? Interesting how we both live just outside of Woodinville proper, but our mail service experiences are so vastly different. But OK, I'll complain to congress... I'm sure that will help my immediate situation.

By the way, I forgot to mention that in addition to my mail arriving ridiculously late yesterday, I received four letters total, and two of them were not even mine... not even close, in fact. Basically, both of our addresses start with a 3, and we have the same ZIP. How they ended up in my mailbox, I will never know. This is not an infrequent occurrence... I suspect that the mailperson is illiterate. OK BRB, going to write to congress real quick.

@Penny Palmer If you look at the Patch FB post on this subject you'll see that late mail to the incorrect address is a frequent occurrence in Woodinville. We simply don't have very good mail service. It has nothing to do with Congress (especially since USPS hasn't received tax payer money since the 1980's). One thing to realize is that if you have a mailbox they have to deliver to you. They have the largest vehicle fleet in the world. Plus they have pensions. They need to restructure like a normal business.

Tony, you are right the postal service does not receive public money. However congress did pass a bill which forces them to fully fund their retirement system for decades ahead. This is costing millions every year that must be payed now. I can get the specifics if you want. This is why post offices are closing (downtown Redmond for example) there are fewer postmen/women etc. Restructuring as some want would mean privatizing. This also means those who are not close to town would not have service. Mistakes happen, but few are terminal. I agree it can be annoying. So my suggestion is still to get congress to change the absurd requirement, pay more for the service or just accept most businesses especially one of this size will make mistakes. * I have no relationship with the post office. :-(

I see only 2 people commenting and complaining.Would like to see a better representation and also would like to know if those people have called to find out what the problem is. If this is just a place to vent Okay.
Tony Bussert August 13, 2013 at 02:57 PM
@Penny Palmer I've called to complain to the local post master. He said they would look into it, but my guess is that they don't really have much incentive to do so. And yes, given that this is posted in the Boards:Speak Out section, I would say this is a place to vent and see what our neighbors say. In this instance it looks like more people commented on the FB post than the post on Patch (one reason why you see a lot of websites using the FB API on their sites for commenting).

Seems some people have too much time on their hands and wait around all day for mail delivery. So sad that you have nothing better than to complain. What are you really getting in the mail? Be more green and get your credit card statements emailed to you, and I could easily give up that junk mail. As for getting my mail at 7:45pm, that would be great since I get home at 7pm from work. Less chance of someone stealing it. But then again, if I did nothing but look out the window for the mail delivery, it would make my day boring enough to complain I suppose.
Handel August 13, 2013 at 03:34 PM
@T. Price: That's a very ignorant, simplistic, and narrow-minded view. Being aware of the time your mail is delivered (and more importantly, in my case, picked up) does not equal "waiting around all day for mail delivery". Also, you may find this a difficult concept to grasp, but some people use the mail system for more important things than sending and receiving credit card statements.

Pardon me Handel, but you are quite the whiner. You chose to live in unincorporated King County (zip code 98077), a very low density semi-rural area. You do not live in Woodinville nor in any other town close to a regular post office. You are lucky to receive home mail delivery at all. And you appear to be using home delivery for business. Why don't you just grow a pair and rent a PO box from either a local post office or one of the private mail box centers. Rest assured, here in the business districts of Woodinville the mail is delivered in a very timely and efficient manner and with a smile.

What a bunch of whiners! Penny said it best. Want better mail service? Then all you govt-so-small-it-can-fit-in-your-ear fanatics need to stop voting against your own best interests by voting for Rethugs & Tbaggers and start supporting unions, a living wage, and pensions, rather than allowing corporations to turn human beings into slaves.

You can't choose to sit in the very back row and then complain that you can't see whats going on. Get incorporated.
