Finding The Art That Feeds Your Soul

Art is very personal. Only you know what will feed your soul. There are so many ways to discover art; visual, performing, written... So, follow me as I offer you possibilities.

“The artist's world is limitless.  It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away.” …Paul Strand

Art can feed the soul.  Bright colors make me happy – music can touch me deeply – a good book enriches my life.  It’s not possible to tell anyone what he or she should consider art – it’s too personal.

Years ago, I went to the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  I was in my early 20s and had never had much interest in visual arts.  I scanned the rooms to see what would catch my eye.  I found it, the only painting that I’ve remembered from that visit.  It was a square canvas about 12”x12”, completely white with a small off white circle in the center.  It had a price of $30,000.  This was art to someone – to me, it was ridiculous.

I have a simple perspective on what art is; if I admire it – want to buy it - read it - watch it - listen to it – then, it is art (to me).  Through this blog, I hope to offer you some new and interesting opportunities to find your art.  I’ll tell you what I’ve discovered both locally and, around the world.  I’ll pass on suggestions from others, share my own experiences so you can find your art, and hopefully feed your soul.

My name is Patty Franklin.  I am a mosaic artist (aka mosaicist) and I’ve lived in Woodinville for over 18 years.  I left the corporate world behind to raise our son (who is now 20) then, in 2003, I started mosaicing - my story can be found at www.thefranklinhouse.com.  I also have a background in theater arts; I sang and performed during high school (think “Glee” + “That 70’s Show”) and, I worked as a volunteer at Studio East in Kirkland for 7 years.  They are an eastside treasure for anyone interested in the performing arts.

Now that you know a bit about me, let’s get to the good stuff.  Do you have any idea how many professional, award-winning artists we have in the Woodinville area?  More than you might think (I think).  I’ll try to introduce you to some of them over time, but for now, I want to tell you about  one of our “best kept secrets” - Bassetti’s Crooked Arbor Gardens.

After living outside the city of Woodinville for over 12 years (yes, I’m one of those unincorporated people), I was amazed to discover Bassetti’s just a few miles from our home, not far from the library.  You may have passed it several times, maybe you even saw the sign and wondered… if you’re out on a Friday or Saturday, turn in - you’ll be entering paradise!

Leanette Bassetti, along with her husband Bill, have cultivated three acres of glorious gardens.  It’s located just two miles from the center of downtown Woodinville on the backside of Cottage Lake (opposite of the park).  They have something for everyone; a woodland garden complete with a crooked arbor, a serene Japanese garden, a spectacular perennial garden, and a large formal herb and vegetable garden with espaliered fruit trees.  You’ll also find private sculptures placed throughout the grounds.  But that’s not all… there are two buildings filled with original artwork and unique gardening supplies.  I’m an art gallery junkie and each year I look forward to them opening in April to see what new artwork Leanette has added.  They will be open through September  - it is a nirvana for any nature and art lover.

Go feed your soul at Bassetti’s and say hi to Leanette and Bill – tell them Patty sent you.
