Waste Management Truck Takes Out Telephone Lines Causing Closure on Woodinville Duvall

A Waste Management truck took down telephone lines on the 19000 block of Woodinville Duvall Road Wednesday morning.

Update: 8:42 a.m. Oct. 25

A motorist posted on the Woodinville Patch Facebook page that the road is wide open as of 8:30 a.m. today.

Update 9:11 a.m. Oct. 24

Puget Sound Energy officials told Patch power lines were not affected by the Waste Management truck, but that telephone lines were down as a result.

David Weed of the Woodinville Fire Department said King County Sheriff's officers were handling the road closure, although he said he didn't have an estimate of when the road might re-open.

The line is down at Cottage Lake Park (if you were wondering where the 19000 block is!).

What happened yesterday 10/23/12 near Leota Jr. High? The entire Wdvl. Fire Dept. was there.

Thanks for asking Tryna. There was a fire - Woodinville Fire is getting me photos and info this morning about it. I went up there, but couldn't see much from the road.

The Woodinville police that responded to the road closing this morning should have routed the west and east bound traffic at the west point of the detour. At 9 am commuters were unassisted as they cued up in LONG lines to enter or leave Woodinville Duvall Rd. at 174th/171st. The traffic was particular heavy on W-D rd. because apparently people unaware of the closing had to double back since the west closing was not at a detour point. This seems like basic police academy 101 stuff. Even setting up cones and a sign would have done the job!

Is it still closed?

The road is back open, according to the King County Sheriff's Office.

I agree with Richelle. I was on W-D Road to get to Carnation this morning and was probably in the massive backup for 20 minutes before being told to turn around and take 174th. The person who told me this was an ordinary person, not even a police or fire employee. Since this incident was reported at about 7am (I was there a little before 9am), a sign should have been posted to alert drivers of the closure. I have no idea why a simple "Road Closed" blockade couldn't have been put up in the road with detour signs leading people around onto Avondale. I wasn't even certain if I could take Avondale back onto W-D so I just went Novelty Hill Road to Carnation since I didn't want to risk it. In my opinion, this is a major fail on Woodinville Fire/Police's part.

So why were road closure signs still up on the eastbound side of the W-D road at 5:45pm by White Stallion Station, and eastbound traffic crawled along while a few cars came through westbound? It was pretty bad.

That's a good question Amy and I'm trying to get an answer. Anyone else try that road this evening?

On Facebook, DeAnna Phillips Johnson reported that Woodinville Duvall was still "One lane at 8:30 pm." Maybe try to find another way during tomorrow's commute?
Sunshine October 25, 2012 at 05:22 AM
Thank you for the update Lisa! I'll be taking an alternate commute tomorrow.

Sunshine, Fire is not responsible for road closures. Legally that is the responsibility of law enforcement.

The biggest question in my mind is how could so many poles have been knocked down. One I can almost understand, but apparently there were five or six poles down in a row! Was it a domino effect, or was this a driver with a grudge against telephone poles?
Sebastian October 25, 2012 at 02:44 PM
When I drove by last night at 7PM, the poles were up but they were still working on it. All the poles were consecutive ones :-) Any updates on whether traffic is still down to one lane this morning?

According to Woodinville Patch Facebook - Kim Canterbury Kramer said today: Wide open at 8:30am
Sunshine October 25, 2012 at 11:51 PM
Thanks Seth. I'm really surprised law enforcement didn't do much. It was a mess yesterday! So happy to see it wide open again this morning. David, that is insane! I'm wondering too what exactly happened.

Took me 3 hrs to make a 45 min drive to Duvall, when I made retrn trip I took the detour a citizen directed earlier. Then in afternoon I made same run I planned ahead and was grateful it was before 5 pm. What a mess.
