Shop with a Cop Day, King County Sheriff's Office Annual Holiday Event is Saturday

More than 400 underprivileged children, mostly from south King County, will be escorted around Wal-Mart in Covington to pick out gifts.

The annual Shop with a Cop event is Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Wal-Mart in Covington. For more than 10 years volunteer law enforcement officers and others take underprivileged children from King County on the annual shopping spree for the holidays.

“This program is unique because, unlike most Christmas charity programs the kids get to pick out their gifts, and get to interact with a police officer,” says event organizer, Sgt. Reid Johnson with the King County Sheriff’s Office.

This year more than 450 underprivileged kids are expected to receive a $50 holiday shopping spree and the chance to “Shop with a Cop” at Wal-Mart in Covington. Hosted by the King County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Greater King County Police Activities League, this annual event gives children ages six months to 15 years old the opportunity to interact with law enforcement in a non-traditional and positive way.

Funds for this event came primarily from the Maple Valley Rotary Club. Each child can use the $50  to purchase toys and gifts for themselves, siblings or family members of their choice.
