Levy Passing to Fund Veterans, Human Services in King County

The measure would collect 5 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.

King County voters were heavily favoring a renewed property tax measure to pay for veterans and human services.

The Veterans and Human Services Levy would pay for facilities and services aimed at cutting medical costs, homelessness and involvement with the criminal justice system, and half of the proceeds would support veterans and their families.

The measure was passing with 66 percent approval Tuesday night.

It would collect 5 cents per $1,000 of assessed value in 2012, and would go up 1 percent or the percentage increase in the consumer price index, whichever is greater, for the following five years. The increase would be capped at 3 percent a year.

The levy was to replace one expiring this year that voters approved in 2005, according to the county.

“Services specific to the needs of veterans and military personnel and their families funded by the levy would include treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, specialized employment assistance, and services that increase self-sufficiency,” according to a statement in the county’s voter pamphlet.

“Services that would also be available to other residents in need would include mental health counseling, substance abuse prevention and treatment, employment assistance, housing assistance, homelessness prevention, and services that reduce involvement in the criminal justice system and reduce emergency medical costs.”

King County will release updated vote totals Wednesday afternoon.
