Resurfacing of NE Woodinville-Duvall Road Postponed Until 2012

Large construction projects on the road this summer caused King County to delay the overlay schedule.

The building of a church and a drugstore on NE Woodinville-Duvall Road in unincorporated King County will delay road resurfacing until 2012, according to Rochelle Ogershok, public affairs specialist for the county’s department of transportation.

The Road Services Division had planned to perform some overlay work on Woodinville-Duvall Road from Woodinville city limits to Paradise Lake Road as part of its 2011 overlay program.

An asphalt overlay is a road-resurfacing method where a layer of asphalt is placed on top of the existing roadway surface. “Asphalt overlays are designed to extend the life of a road's driving surface, keep roads in good condition by preventing potholes and preserving the underlying road bed structure, preventing further deterioration of the road” according to the county’s website. The asphalt overlay also helps smooth surface irregularities and prevents further deterioration of the road.

Based on previous paving experiences and traffic volumes on NE Woodinville-Duvall, it was decided that the paving should occur at night to minimize disruptions, Ogershok said. The work was planned for sometime between mid-July and Sept 1st.

“But in July, we learned that a church project that recently broke ground has some pretty substantial frontage and roadway improvements planned that will significantly impact our planned overlay,” she said. “Roads staff met with the church contractor and were told the frontage improvements won’t be done in time to match our overlay schedule.”

In addition to the church project, there is also a new is being constructed at the intersection of Avondale  Woodinville-Duvall Road which will require some intersection repairs that will also need to be done prior to paving.

“So given these multiple projects and issues, the decision was made to do some prep and repair work this year and defer the overlay project until 2012,” Ogerstok said.
