Strike Update: Waste Management Mum on Woodinville Pick Up Today

The company announced it plans to hire permanent drivers to replace striking workers and is picking up in most of the surrounding towns.

UPDATE: At 8:45 a.m. we reacehed Waste Management and confirmed Woodinville will not get service on Wednesday.

Waste Management sent out a press release late Tuesday night listing cities it that will recieve trash pick-up today, Woodinville was not among them. Waste Management has not responded to calls from Woodinville Patch as to why this community is not getting service, or if it was just an oversight that Woodinville was not on the list.

Redmond residents who normally have their garbage collected by Waste Management on Wednesdays can expect trash pick-up today, the company announced in a news release Tuesday evening.

All regularly scheduled commercial business garbage routes will also be serviced on Wednesday, according to the news release. No recycling or yard waste will be collected.

Waste Management held a news conference on Tuesday where company officials said they plan to begin hiring permanent recycle truck drivers to replace those on strike. As The Seattle Times reported, Waste Management is facing a $1.25-million-a-day fine from the City of Seattle if pick-up does not take place today.

Patch will have further updates as more information becomes available. Click here to see our earlier coverage on the strike.

They better be getting my garbage today! I'm pretty miffed at this whole thing and it doesn't look like it's getting resolved any time soon.

Waste Management just confirm no pick-up in Woodinville today.

Waste Management needs to get back to the negotiating table. It seems to me that would be the fastest way to clear this mess up. We are going to be at least three weeks without pick up. I've run out of places to put my garbage and of course, no reduction on our bill for missed pick up. Annoying.

Why not put the offer from WM to a vote to the Union members? I've seen and heard that many would like to vote on the proposal. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. To me it sounds like it all comes down to the new contract the Garbage guys got a couple of months ago and the Recyclers want the same deal.

no pick up today? I'm heading to the dump this weekend. can't deal with another week of rotting garbage.
Graham August 01, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Is it true that the total package these guys are on is almost $100,000 including benefits? And they are on strike because they aren't getting enough? Fire them and replace them with people who are willing to work. There are *a lot* of people who would be delighted to earn that sort of money for what is a fairly low skilled job.

Here's what I found said about the package WM is offering: Waste Management is offering a six-year deal it says would raise average salaries from $58,000 to $68,000 a year. If benefits are included, the offer is worth $98,000 a year to a driver at the end of the sixth year, the company said.

Ditto what Graham says--no wonder the WM bill is so exorbitantly high. Plenty of people are out of work who would love to make $68k/yr plus benefits for such a job. Reagan got it right with the air traffic controllers! It is union thugs just like these who abused collective bargaining to the point that so many of America's manufacturing jobs have permanently gone offshore. Almost $100k/yr to pick up the garbage--seriously?!

Tony, we've been covering the strike since the beginning, including several stories on the package Waste Management offered, you can read them all here, http://woodinville.patch.com/search?keywords=local+117

I'm a resident of Woodinville. No pickup yesterday, and they didn't pick up yard waste last week. I called them yesterday and told them that I do not pay for service that I do not receive and they should expect a 37.5% reduction in my payment this month. I suggest all residents send them the same message.
