WHS Student's Essay Wins Eastside Republican Club's Scholarship Contest

Chelsea Bateman, a student at Woodinville High School, won a $1,000 scholarship and will be recognized at the club's regular meeting this Tuesday.

The Eastside Republican Club (ERC) has released the names of the three students who are top finishers in its 2013 scholarship essay contest.

Entrants were asked to write a short essay addressing the question: "What is the best way to stop gun violence without infringing on the rights protected by the Second Amendment?". Winners were selected by a committee of judges made up of ERC board members.

The following students have been awarded scholarships and will be recognized at a club meeting this Tuesday at the Lake Washington VFW in Redmond.

  • $1,000 WinnerChelsea Bateman, Redmond, a student at Woodinville High School, planning to attend Western Washington University
  • $750 WinnerSamuel Chong, Mercer Island, a student at Mercer Island High School, planning to attend Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL)
  • $500 WinnerShannon Harris, Snohomish, a student at the University of Washington
