Will the Carol Edwards Center be Razed for New Civic Campus?

The Woodinville City Council will again grapple with the future of the Old Woodinville Schoolhouse as it considers a plan to level the Carol Edwards Center and allow the private sector to develop the land.

What was a plan to renovate the Old Woodinville Schoolhouse may become a project that includes razing the Carol Edwards Center and allowing the private sector to develop all the land, using the historic building as an anchor. The council will visit the issue at its Tuesday, May 8 meeting.

The council asked for a study on the viability of renovating the Old Woodinville Schoolhouse last year, what came back last month was a plan to scrap the Carol Edwards Center (CEC), currently home of the Y at the Carol Edwards Center, and turn the property over to private development

At its April 10 meeting the council seemed a bit taken aback when it was presented with three proposals to renovate the Old Woodinville Schoolhouse, two of which called for a complete renovation of the civic campus by the private sector, including the demolition of the Carol Edwards Center. The other plan calls for the demolition of the CEC in favor of underground parking and parkland at ground level (see PDF).

Back in May, 2011, the council unanimously decided to allow the marketplace to decide what should be done with one of Woodinville's few remaining historic buildings (). The council asked for a study on how much development needs to occur for the renovation of the Old Schoolhouse to make fiscal sense by the private sector.
