21 Acres Ambitious Vegetable Gardening- Fall is the Shoulder Season for Growing

Join Skyroot Farm Manager and UW Environmental Studies
instructor Beth Wheat by enrolling in 21 Acres first weekend course, Ambitious Vegetable Gardening. Beth will follow up her engaging and participatory spring classes with a specialized look at the fall growing season.

Most people think of autumn as the end of the growing season, but luckily, it can also be a time when harvesting gets extended or planting for spring can begin. Yes, the days are shorter, but a number of crop plants can successfully survive late autumn and winter and you will learn how to make this happen.

You will learn how to:
1) Prepare beds for cooler conditions including,
cover cropping, heat mulching;
2) What can you plant now? Review winter
vegetable varieties including garlic and brassicas;
3) Preferable soil types
for winter vegetable;
4) Build a cloche, hot boxes and cold frames that
ensure plant survival.

We are a non-profit, continuing education school utilizing an agricultural context in which to learn how to apply principles of sustainable agriculture. The School is located in the newly green-built Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living.
