The Master Gardener Clinic will be held after each seminar for an hour. If you just want to come for the Master Gardener Clinic, no pre-registration is necessary.

  • Growing your own organic food is a delicious way to garden in the Pacific Northwest. This workshop will teach you how to choose the best sites for food-growing, learn when to start along with simple design techniques, tips for building healthy soil and maintaining fertility. You will also learn what plant species are well-suited for our climate, crop rotation and other natural pest control strategies. The presentation includes a PowerPoint, a hands-on display of food gardening resources, plus printed information for all attendees.

How to Prune and Renovate the Overgrown Garden

Speaker: Cass Turnbull, Founder of Plant Amnesty, Author and Lecturer

  • This is the primary class of the series Master Pruner courses given by Cass Turnbull. It covers basic pruning of ornamental trees and shrubsas well as creative solutions to the overgrown or over-planted garden. The types of pruning cuts are shown and discussed. The concept of the ‘pruning budget’ is introduced. Plants are divided into three categories according to their natural habits and pruning techniques given for each. Before and after slides of pruning and diagrams will be used to illustrate pruning for size reduction and pruning for definition (thinning). Class attendees will also gain insight into the process of yard renovation, where pruning is but one tool in restoring a garden.

June 4th

How to Easily convert a Sprinkler to Drip Irrigation

Speaker: Paula Anderson, Horticulturist and Conservation Specialist

  • Learn how to take off an existing sprinkler head in your yard and convert an area, such as a shrub bed or vegetable garden, to drip irrigation. We will go through the changeover from start to finish and you will see how easy, and even fun, this is to do. The presentation includes a PowerPoint and a demonstration of drip irrigation products. Each attendee will receive a free DVD on drip irrigation to take home.

  • Sustainability is the new buzz word, come and learn how our landscapes and gardens can contribute to your sustainable lifestyle. You will learn about healthy soils and their contribution to the garden. Learn about storm water management ideas like rain gardens and cisterns. You will also become familiar with Natural Yard Care techniques, raising food in your garden and even aerobic gardening. The landscapes of the future will help us as individuals and communities reduce our carbon footprints, reduce toxins in our environment and clean our water. Learn the steps to creating

a sustainable landscape and garden.

This presentation given by Susie Egan of Cottage Lake Gardens will show you trees, shrubs, perennials and groundcover that have beautiful winter interest whether with winter-blooming flowers, fragrance, berries, cones or colorful evergreen foliage. The bonus is that most are also drought tolerant!
