Parents Group for Later Start Time Urging Attendance at School Board Meeting

PALS has more than 1,500 signatures from Northshore School District parent calling for a later start time for junior high and high school students and plans to presenting at today's meeting.

Organizers of Parent Advocates for Later Start (PALS) are asking anyone interesrted in chaning the school start times for the Northshore School District, which includes Woodinville schools, to attend the Tuesday, June 12 meeting of the school board at 4 p.m. to voice their concerns.

PALS organizers sent the following letter to Woodinville Patch:

"Thank you to everyone who signed the PALS petition. There are now over 1,500 parents & student signatures, and it is growing! However, we need your help again. Unfortunately the school board has pushed the Later Start issue to the June 26 agenda “in order to determine if there is consensus to further the process at this time”, when school is out and many parents/students are on vacation. Therefore PALS would like parents/students to either speak during the public comment section at the beginning of the meeting or just be present to show support for a later start at the NSD board meeting  on Tuesday June 12 at 4pm in the district offices. This may make a difference to the board’s decision later in June.

As a reminder PALS is asking to run two models, 20 minute later start for HS and 15 minute later start for JH, and to look at an 8.00 a.m. start in the future as things in the district fluctuate. To some of you 20 minutes may not seem worth it; however, published studies have shown that every 15 minutes of sleep for an adolescent can improve test scores, grades and overall wellbeing. Plus, a 7:30 high school start time will put NSD in line with all of our neighboring school districts who all start between 7:30 – 8:00 a.m.  PLEASE COME ON JUNE 12 TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT OF A LATER START!"

The Northshore School Board will meet at district headquarters at 3330 Monte Villa Parkway, Bothell, WA 98021.

Congratulations to Inglemoor and Woodinville DECA teams. I knew you'd do us proud. NorthshoreRead More School District's DECA program has been winning awards for years. One of my ex-students, Heather Pressler, a DECA award winner from Inglemoor, is now a PhD candidate in molecular biology back on the East Coast. DECA opens so many doors to success.

I have been extremely frustrated in the past in trying to effectively communicate with Frontier. MyRead More developing sense was one of very poor live support. I find it refreshing to see Frontier respond in a timely manner to this very public assertion. One can hope this is also occurring in your phone support, especially after hours...

I have spoken to Mr. Gaulke and assured him we are not cutting speeds in the Woodinville market (orRead More any of our markets). We are working with him to approach his technical issues from scratch and will do all we can to alleviate his concerns about his speeds. His business, and all the business from our customers in the Woodinville market is very valuable to us. While we are disappointed to receive feedback his service is not living up to our standards, we are grateful for the opportunity to work with Mr. Gaulke and keep his valuable business. We welcome inquiries from other customers if there is anything we can do to improve. Please reach out to me at 425.275.8579 and let us know how we can help. Frontier has spent the past three years expanding broadband to hundreds of thousands of homes acrossRead More the US and increasing speeds in many of our markets. Mr. Gaulke’s experience and recount of his conversation with one of our reps comes as a surprise to us. We are checking our records to find out what the possible miscommunication could have been. In the meantime, let us be clear: We are not decreasing speeds in Woodinvile, or any of our markets for that matter. We will be reaching out to Mr. Gaulke to see if we can alleviate any lingering concerns. Christy Reap Frontier Communications
