Woodinville High School Music Teacher Receives Fellowship

Eric Lucas will attend jazz studies program at Washington University in Saint Louis, Mo.

Eric Lucas, director of instrumental music and performing arts department chair, received a fellowship award from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to attend the NEH Summer Institute at Washington University in Saint Louis, Mo. Lucas will attend the Jazz, Motown and the Transformation of American Culture, 1959-1975 program July 6-29.

The NEH Summer Institute presents teachers with the best available learning on important humanities issues and works being taught in U.S. schools. According to NEH, the 25–30 participating teachers compare and synthesize the various perspectives offered by the faculty, make connections between the institute’s content and classroom applications and often develop improved teaching materials for their classrooms.

A Woodinville staff member since 2001, Lucas teaches wind ensemble, percussion ensemble, orchestra, jazz ensemble and rock guitar. He has also been an adjunct professor at Bellevue College. Lucas is a member of the Music Educators National Conference and has served four terms as president of the Northlake Music Educators Association.
