As the economy struggles to right itself, the number of horses being neglected or abandoned has risen sharply, according to Davis. Less than 3% of horses being severely neglected or horribly abused are ever reported, she added. Of the reported cases, less than 1 % are prosecuted.

The volunteers at Hope For Horses work tirelessly to take care of horses that are sick or injured or have simply been abandoned by owners who no longer care for them, Davis said. "We also work tirelessly to change laws and provide education and assistance to law enforcement. But the work is expensive and it never, ever ends."

Hope For Horses is a non-profit equine welfare organization founded in 2001 to improve the lives of neglected, abused, or abandoned horses in Washington State. It has been instrumental in helping investigate horse cruelty complaints that have led to prosecution of abusers and the rescue of horses.

Tickets for the event are $3-$5, pre-registration is required. To register, click here.
