Police should probably not chase a stolen vehicle when the lives of innocent people are at risk. ItRead More is just a car and the suspect will be caught eventually. This is a perfect example of why not to do it.

Scott, Thanks for your patience and assistance with getting the 15000 Wood-Red Rd.ready for move-inRead More years ago. I remember learning quite a bit about fire code requirements for commercial building occupancy back at your desk at the old schoolhouse City Hall. You have served us all well over the years. Thanks again.

Scott and I may not always have seen eye-to-eye when I worked for WF&R, but I always knew whereRead More he stood and what he stood for. Lt. Reifers was (and I presume still is) a staunch advocate for firefighter safety and health. He understood that the risks firefighters face are manageable if we recognize and respond appropriately. More importantly, he understood why we need to do so: To ensure we serve the public efficiently and effectively. Scott, thank you for your service to the District's citizens and the firefighters who protect them. Enjoy a well-deserved and happy retirement.

I'm not from Woodinville. I'm from Auburn. And I didn't know Cossey personally, but I knew OF him.Read More Why can't the police release at least a FEW more details about the crime? They ask citizens to help, but provide them nothing to work with. Was there forced entry? Were items (besides Cossey's wallet) taken from the home and what were these items? I understand the concept of holding back a few details in order to weed out false confessors, or for prosecutorial or investigatory reasons, but this is ridiculous. How the heck can anyone help when the police don't even give the slightest hint on what people should look for? It's been almost three weeks now, and sooner or later the police are going to have to provide something that will assist the public in helping them solve the case. The more time that goes by, the less likely it is that the killer will be caught, and the MORE likely it becomes that the killer will destroy any possible evidence and flee the area. Woodinville residents should not put up with this, in my very humble opinion.

Is it just me, or are there other Woodinville residents that are outraged that our council wouldRead More practically ignore a Woodinville murder/burglary in favor of bringing back the dead annexation issue? The detectives are asking for the public's help to solve this horrible crime. We can help by telling our council to stop spending money on non-residents and get down to the business of protecting our neighbors. Woodinville has one of the highest crime rates in the area, but 4 of our council members are fixated on UGB adjustments and the old school house. I'm ashamed for Earl's family. The Woodinville council is too busy to do anything but support their campaign contributors. Liz Aspen, Les Rubstello, Scott Hageman, and Paulette Bauman, you are heartless, just heartless.

OOps wrong math. It should be 1,056 feet away. And there was another one too. The Mike EmeryRead More murder was just about 2,738 feet away in 2001...don't think that one has been solved. And there was a fourth one on the Snohomish Co side of 156th-75th, about 1.5 miles away where a man was found dead at his former spouses house in the 1990's that is still unsolved. Bad karma or bad people.
Brian Lowrey May 8, 2013 at 05:35 pm
Yes, in 1998 - just 528 feet away,

Second, Brian?

According to King County Sheriff Sgt. Cindi West, there is no reason to believe other WoodinvilleRead More residents are in any danger. Maybe Sgt. West should explain why she feels that this is an isolated incident. I think we are in danger, and we need to rely less on the police, and more on ourselves. Keep your doors locked and a gun in your pocket.

We still don't have info on if there were signs of a break-in and Earl went to investigate andRead More spooked the violent burglar or what?
Ron Olson April 30, 2013 at 06:08 pm
A Woodinville resident was murdered, but police spokesperson Cindi West doesn't think there is anyRead More reason for citizens to be concerned? She obviously doesn't live in Woodinville.

Hi Ron. Waiting for results from the medical examiner, which could come today.

Any update on this story?

The Patch has done an interesting job of NOT covering what's happening at Woodinville Fire &Read More Rescue. The editor seems happy to regurgitate the District's pablum rather than probing in the public interest. Little if any coverage has appeared regarding the pending annexations besides the union's expression of support for a merger between the fire district and the City of Bothell's fire department. These are clearly separate issues. The annexation will result in the loss of more than $1,000,000 per year in district revenues. The district will remain responsible for providing protection under the King County mutual aid system, which dispatches the closest available fire or EMS unit. In the meantime, the revenue reduction will result in layoffs of reductions-in-force through attrition. This means fewer firefighters will cover more calls. And you can bet that most of that activity will flow from north to south and from east to west. In other words, Woodinville will become a suburb of Bothell subsidizing its public safety services. Patch has reproduced the job announcement for a new fire chief, but given no coverage to the fact that commissioners have made arrangements related to the annexation to transfer day-to-day management of the district to Bothell's fire chief when Mark Risen heads back to Bellevue in June. (I'll bet he's feeling relieved!) Lisa, pretend you're a real journalist! Do your job, get the story and inform the public before it's too late.

Now that voters have extended Woodinville Fire & Rescue's benefit service charge authority forRead More another six years commissioners have a blank check with which to compensate another new chief. But wait, are they hiring a new chief or not? Last they said, the Board wanted Bothell's chief to have a go at running the department when the current victim returns to Bellevue in June. Who's going to take this job without the guarantee of a generous severance package? Better yet, who's crazy enough to take this job period? The firefighters union clearly controls the board. Their biggest interest is not in serving the citizens, but in serving themselves. The benefit charge and lack of clear direction from voters that the commissioners need to get their house in order make it all but certain they will get their way, which means fatter pay checks, shorter hours and less service to citizens as Woodinville residents prop up an already stretched system in Bothell. Way to strike an own goal Woodinville!

One of the downsides to a 40% taxation is that there are no controls on what that 40% means. So, ifRead More the budget has to go up because of unforseen costs then the 40% portion of that goes up the same percentage. The $1.50 maximum is still there but it has always been there. I would prefer to see a cap of "X" dollars distributed amongst the properties because that is tangible and represents a limit.
Ron Swanson April 23, 2013 at 12:08 pm
Here is another question that should be answered by the commissioners - In the event Bothell endsRead More up as the merger partner, wouldn't it mean that Woodinville and the District's residents will be subsidizing the fire services for Bothell folks since they are limited to $1.50 limit and they will use Woodinville's benefit charge to fund the difference? The difference is of course for the fat union contracts - lets not be fooled by dangling carrot (temporary hold on pay increase) and forget that the firefighter union for Bothell and Woodinville merged recently to take advantage of just this situation. There is absolutely no good reason to reauthorize this spending authority for the district. It is simply not a fiscally responsible thing to do here. Vote NO at the ballot boxes.

Ron, it's interesting that Gary played the man and not the ball by attacking Jeff's motives. SureRead More sign of a weak hand, I'd say. Too bad we can't get straightforward answers to simple questions from Commissioner Coughlin. At least he weighed in here. The others have clearly exercised their right to remain silent.
